How to Dribble a Basketball

Coaches Note: Ball handling is a very hard skill for the younger players to develop. Some catch on quickly, some never get the hang of it. The bottom line is that all players must develop good ball handling skills. Whether the player is tall, short, skinny, or heavy – all players must work hard to develop good ball handling skills. It’s great to have a point guard that can handle the ball with ease, but it’s even better to have a team of great ball handlers. There is a myth that post players do not need ball handling skills. Well I say that is nonsense. If a post player wants to succeed in the game of basketball they must develop good ball handling skills. Post players don’t have to be at the point guard level, but they must be able to handle the basketball when needed.

At the younger levels, coaches must practice ball handling drills consistently. Good ball handling skills also helps players gain much needed confidence in their game. Make ball handling a major focus in your practice plans.
